Skye - ADOPTED

Meet the Puppy

Skye was originally taken out of a bad situation by the local authorities in the south, followed by a few months at the county shelter, and then the shelter reached out to us for help. We were happy to take Skye out of the environment where she was overwhelmed and struggling, and found that this gal has a lot of life, love, and energy to give! Skye was fostered in the south by a busy family with dogs, cats, and small humans, and she even got to spend a week with our southern trainer!

Skye was originally adopted to a wonderful family up in New England, but due to no fault of her own, personal life circumstances have forced us to start the process over for Skye. The original adopters are happily fostering her while we find her the next fit!

Temperament

Due to family circumstances outside of her control, Skye is looking for a home again! The bonus is that her current family paid for a two-week board-and-train, to set a healthy training foundation for Skye, and the trainer is happy to transfer the knowledge and lessons through 3-sessions with her new adopters (at no cost to the new adopter)! She knows how to walk in a heel-side position (even at a busy Lowe’s and Home Depot), she has learned the place command, and she’s working on building that reliable recall for off-leash fun!

Skye is a typical, happy go-lucky, energetic doodle! She is affectionate, playful with humans and canines. She would be a remarkable adventure pup, someone to hit the beach, lakes, and mountains of New England! She can be a little shy with new people, especially men, but she comes around quickly.

Worth noting, but Skye is a smart and saavy opportunist. If you give her an inch, she will always try to take a mile! Because of that, we will strongly urge adopters to keep the crate as a lifelong tool. If she thinks it’s not a requirement, she will whine to try to convince she doesn’t need time in “her room.” But if the boundary and tone are set from day one, she understands and starts to respect the rules. She does thrive with boundaries and clear direction, and really aims to please. She is one SMART cookie!

We WILL REQUIRE that Skye continues her education with the 3-sessions with her trainer in the Camden, Maine area. Skye already has the foundation of balanced training, including heel-side walking on leash, place command with distractions, and off-leash control with the e-collar. WHY? Because the family has already started implement the foundational elements of this style of training, Her trainer will help you continue to work on her reliability, manners, and FUN.

Needs

  • Skye would love an active household with plenty of walks and adventures! She is a great hiking partner, and loves all weather, all lengths of adventure, and all kinds of adventure (beach, mountains, forest, etc…)

  • Skye would like a back yard to play endless games of fetch. Traditional fencing is NOT required.

  • Skye would love a dog sibling or dog friends. She loves to play play play! But is respectful of those who do not want to play with her.

  • Adopters should be ready to start PROFESSIONAL training with one of her current trainer to continue proper dog socialization, work on nice leash manners using leash pressure, and heel-side walking, structured walking, place command, and prepare for off-leash remote collar fun.

  • As an organization, we prefer balanced training, and not “purely positive training.” Balanced training strikes a happy balance between a TON of positive rewards, but also rules, structure, and specific tools to set tone and boundaries for our dogs. We are firm believers that the more rules you have for your dog when they are young, the more freedom they earn as they get older. So set down expectations and boundaries for your dog now with a trainer and the right tools, so they can be part of all the family fun! Those with balanced training experience, and experience with slip lead/training collar/prong/remote collar as communication tools are preferred but not required!

Those who don’t believe in rules, routine, and structure for your dog, need not apply.

PLEASE KEEP IN MIND, we will only consider applicants where one adult has a more flexible schedule, as puppies are a lot of work, and will require potty breaks, exercise, training and continued human and dog socialization as they grow up.

Crate/Potty Training

All puppies and dogs rescued by FAVOR are crate trained, sleeping in the crate from 8pm-6am (with a potty break around 11pm), and accustomed to some day crate time as well. Puppies also understand the basic concept of peeing outside, but there is ALWAYS a transition period where crate cries and potty accidents WILL HAPPEN in a new home, as the dog transitions to new rules and ways to communicate.

We always recommend keeping dogs crated during nap times, bed time, and when they are alone to protect them from danger such as chewing on cords, socks, and other objects. Foreign objects can get stuck in their stomachs which can result in a very expensive surgery. We also encourage using the crate like a bedroom for your dogs as they get older, where they can take naps, take a break from human interaction, and have a time out. More importantly, the crate provides them a safe place to go to when things get overwhelming, like a lot of people, loud noises, extreme weather. Think of the crate as their “den,” and a place for them to unwind. We all need a break sometimes!
