Philosophy of Dog Food

The dog food industry is a dirty one. Educate yourself by watching the Netflix Documentary, Pet Fooled or reading The Truth about Pet Food. There is virtually no regulation on dog food, and a lot of it is getting shipping from China filled with corn products. Unfortunately, dogs bodies are not meant to process corn, or some of the other fillers that the big four tend to use (Hills, Purina, Eukbanka, and Royal Canin).

Learn How to Read a Label: First five ingredients is what the majority of the food is made out of, and should always be meat, egg, meat meal, and high quality grains (we are not anti-grain, but we believe in GOOD grains) like barley or brown rice. Grain-free diets often lead to use of too many legumes, which new research suggests links to DCM, a heart disease however, the FDA recently pulled back their claim that grain-free causes harm. Again, not all grain-free diets are bad, it’s just about learning how to read a label.

  • Meat should always be sourced from North America and Europe

  • The company should process their own kibble in North America

Vets: As much as a value vets, they are not nutritionists, and don't investigate all the kibble out there. You need to be an advocate for your pet!

Raw/Cooked Diets: If you have questions about raw or lightly cooked diets, we can provide resources. There are also ways to enhance your dog’s diet without breaking the bank.

IMPORTANT: Better quality and higher protein kibble equals nicer dog coat with less shedding, healthier digestive system with less bloating, and an overall healthier, happier dog. We are what we eat, same goes for dogs. Healthy food equals healthy dog.

BAD PET FOOD BRANDS: Beneful, Blue Buffalo, Ceaser Diamond, Hills, Iams, Nutro, Pedigree, Purina Pro, Science Diet, and Taste of the Wild

Sardines

WHY: Sardines are great source of fish oil and taurine. The fish oil helps keep shedding down, keeps skin greasy, and nails strong. Fish Oil works too, but sardines are so much more fun.

TIP: Give your dog one sardine a day, and you will see a difference! Be sure to buy NO SALT ADDED! Can be in water or olive oil.

WHERE TO BUY: $1.99/can at Trader Joe’s

Natural Peanut Butter

WHY: Stick to the natural, sugar-free, unsalted peanut butter. Sugar makes a dog hyper and fake sugar leads to diarrhea, so stick to the natural stuff.

TIP: Great to put in the kong and freeze it. Kong is great mental stimulation for a dog.

Training Treats

Training treats are great! Do not over do it though, as too many treats can definitely lead to upset stomachs. If you are going to do some training, then plan a light meal for the dogs ahead of time.

Made in small batches in New York, and hands down our favorite treat brand. We love all their flavors. Their crunchy and soft training treats are the best!

Puppy Teeth CHEW TREATS

These are great for those teething mouths, and great to give a pup during witching hour.

Skip the raw hide and bully sticks, as they are filled with chemicals.
Skip the elk antlers, they can lead to teeth shaving and cracked teeth. Our dogs learned the hard way.
